‘Ecobordering’: casting immigration control as environmental protection

Based on an analysis of 22 European far-right parties, we identify emergent discourse in environmental politics, which conceptualise as ‘ecobordering’. This seeks to blame immigration for national degradation, draws colonial and racialised imaginaries nature order rationalise further border restrictions ‘protect’ the ‘nativist stewardship’ nature. As such, ecobordering obscure primary driving causes ecological crisis entrenched production consumption practices Global North economies, whilst simultaneously shifting migration from South where degradation has been most profound.
